Monastery of St Anthony

The father of monks · Egypt

In church the young Egyptian Anthony heard Jesus' words: 'Go, sell what you have and give to the poor.' He did exactly that, and moved ever deeper into the desert to live in prayer. People came to him for advice, and thousands followed his example: he is called the father of monks. Today the Coptic monastery at the foot of his mountain welcomes visitors, and you can climb up to the cave where he lived.

Did you know?

The monastery at the foot of his mountain is one of the oldest in the world and still has Coptic monks.

An inspiring story

What gets through the snares

What would get you through anything?

Anthony had given away everything he owned and gone to live in the Egyptian desert. Once he saw in a vision the whole world covered with snares, set to trap people. Groaning, he asked: 'What can possibly get through all this?' A voice answered: 'Humility.' Why humility, and not strength or cleverness? Because snares catch those who think they can manage on their own. Whoever knows they need God walks more carefully, and stays free.

The desert monks passed this story on for centuries as one of the shortest lessons in faith. Perhaps it is also the hardest.

God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble.James 4:6
