Mount Ararat
Where Noah's ark came to rest · Turkey
After the flood, Genesis says, the ark came to rest 'on the mountains of Ararat', the ancient land of Urartu. Noah sent out a raven and then a dove, which came back with a fresh olive leaf: a sign that new life had begun. God then set the rainbow in the clouds as a promise never again to destroy the earth by a flood. Today the snow-capped volcano rises above the plain near the borders of Turkey, Armenia and Iran, and is a symbol of Armenia.
The Bible names a mountain range, not one peak. Islamic tradition points to Mount Judi, further south.
