Mount Carmel

Elijah and the fire from heaven · Israel

In a time of drought the prophet Elijah challenged the 450 prophets of Baal on this mountain: the god who answered with fire would be the true God. Baal's prophets danced and shouted all day without an answer. Elijah prayed a short prayer, and fire from the Lord burned up his offering, even though it had been soaked with water. Today the Carmelite monastery of Deir al-Muhraqa stands on the traditional spot, with a wide view over the Jezreel valley.

Did you know?

The Carmelite order of monks and nuns is named after this mountain. Their monastery stands where the contest is said to have taken place.

An inspiring story

A cloud as small as a hand

How often would you go and look?

After more than three years of drought, Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees to pray for rain. He sent his servant to look out over the sea. 'There is nothing there.' Seven times Elijah sent him back. The seventh time the servant said: 'A cloud as small as a man's hand is rising from the sea.' Why keep sending him? Because Elijah trusted that God would answer, even when he could see nothing yet. Soon the sky grew black and heavy rain began to fall.

Answers often start small. Keep looking, even the seventh time.
