Jasna Góra, Częstochowa
The Black Madonna · Poland
Since 1382 the Pauline monks of Jasna Góra, the 'bright mountain', have kept a dark icon of Mary holding the child Jesus. In 1655 the small monastery held out against a Swedish army, and afterwards King John Casimir dedicated Poland to Mary as its queen. Through wars and occupation the icon became a symbol of Polish faith and freedom. Today millions of pilgrims come each year, many of them on foot from all over Poland, especially around 15 August.
Did you know?
The two scars on Mary's cheek are said to come from robbers who attacked the icon in 1430.
