Dordrecht
The Synod of Dort · Netherlands
In 1618 and 1619 Reformed theologians from the Netherlands and abroad met in Dordrecht for a great synod. They had to settle a bitter conflict about predestination between the followers of Arminius and of Gomarus, which had divided the country. The synod wrote the Canons of Dort, still a confession of many Reformed churches worldwide. Today the medieval Grote Kerk still towers over the old harbour town where the synod met.

The same synod ordered a new Dutch Bible translation: the 'Statenvertaling', finished in 1637.
