Göreme, Cappadocia
Churches in fairy chimneys · Turkey
In the soft volcanic rock of Cappadocia, Christians carved churches, chapels and monasteries and painted them with bright frescoes of the life of Jesus. This is the land of the 4th-century church fathers Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa, who helped shape the faith in the Trinity. Many of the paintings date from the 10th to the 12th century. Today the Göreme Open-Air Museum lets you step inside these painted cave churches, such as the Dark Church with its well-preserved colours.

Nearby, Christians also dug whole underground cities, like Derinkuyu, deep enough to shelter thousands of people.
