Jacob's Well

Jesus and the Samaritan woman · Nablus

At midday Jesus sat down, tired, at the well that Jacob had dug, and asked a Samaritan woman for a drink. Jews and Samaritans did not talk to each other, and a teacher did not speak with a woman alone, yet he offered her 'living water'. She ran back to her town to tell everyone she might have met the Messiah. Today the well lies in the crypt of a Greek Orthodox church in Nablus, completed in 2007.

Did you know?

The well, about 40 metres deep, lies in the crypt of a Greek Orthodox church, and you can still drink from it.

An inspiring story

A jar left behind

What would you leave behind if someone truly saw you?

It was noon, the hottest hour, when a Samaritan woman came to the well alone. Jesus, tired from the road, asked her for a drink. She was amazed: a Jewish man talking to a Samaritan woman? Then he told her about her own life, about her five husbands, without condemning her, and spoke of water that would quench every thirst. She left her water jar at the well and ran into the town: 'Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.' Why run to the very people she had avoided? Because being fully known and still accepted had set her free.

The outsider of the town became its first messenger. Many believed because of her.

Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.John 4:29
