Kyiv Cave Monastery
Monks in the caves · Kyiv, Ukraine
In 1051 the monk Anthony, who had lived on Mount Athos, settled in a cave in the hills above the Dnieper. Others joined him, among them Theodosius, and the community grew into the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, the 'monastery of the caves'. It became one of the great centres of Orthodox faith and learning in Eastern Europe. Today its golden domes and the 18th-century bell tower rise above the river, and the site is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
