Meteora

Monasteries in the sky · Greece

From the 14th century monks built monasteries on top of huge sandstone pillars rising out of the plain of Thessaly. Up there they were closer to heaven and safe from raiders in troubled times. 'Meteora' means 'suspended in the air'. Today six of the monasteries are still lived in, and you can reach them by steps cut into the rock.
