Dexter Avenue Church, Montgomery

Martin Luther King Jr. · Alabama, United States

In 1954 the 25-year-old Martin Luther King Jr. became pastor of this Baptist church, a block from the Alabama State Capitol. When Rosa Parks was arrested in December 1955 for refusing to give up her bus seat, Black leaders met in the church and organised a boycott. King became its spokesman, preaching non-violence and love for enemies. Today you can visit the church and, in the basement, a large mural of the civil rights movement.

Did you know?

The boycott lasted 381 days, until the buses of Montgomery were desegregated.

An inspiring story

Midnight at the kitchen table

What do you do when you have nothing left?

One night in January 1956, during the bus boycott, Martin Luther King Jr. got yet another threatening phone call. He was 27. Exhausted and afraid, he sat at his kitchen table with a cup of coffee and prayed out loud that he had nothing left. He later said that at that moment he heard an inner voice telling him to stand up for justice and truth, and that he would never be alone. Why did that change him? Because his courage no longer depended on his own strength. Three days later his house was bombed. He stood on his porch and told the angry crowd to meet hate with love.

The movement that changed America began at a kitchen table, with a man admitting he could not go on.

Stand up for righteousness. Stand up for justice. Stand up for truth. And lo, I will be with you.Martin Luther King Jr., remembering that night
