Nicaea
The Nicene Creed · İznik, Turkey
In 325 Emperor Constantine gathered about 300 bishops at Nicaea for the first council of the whole church. They argued about the teaching of Arius, who said the Son of God was created, and confessed that Jesus is 'true God from true God, of one being with the Father'. The creed that grew from it is still said by Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant Christians. Today İznik is a small town by a lake, with old walls and the former Hagia Sophia church, where the seventh council met in 787.
