Nineveh
Jonah's unwilling mission · Mosul, Iraq
Nineveh was the great capital of Assyria, the empire that would later destroy the northern kingdom of Israel. When God sent Jonah to warn the city, he fled the other way by ship and ended up in the belly of a great fish. When he finally preached here, the whole city repented, and Jonah was angry that God showed mercy to his enemies. Today the remains of Nineveh's walls and gates lie on the east bank of the Tigris, inside the city of Mosul.

The shrine of Jonah in Mosul was blown up in 2014. Beneath it, archaeologists then found tunnels into an Assyrian palace.
