The man who had every reason not to help
Would you help strangers from the country that had enslaved you?
In 1614 an English captain kidnapped Tisquantum, also called Squanto, and sold him as a slave in Spain. He escaped, found his way to England and came home years later, only to find that his whole village had died of disease. Shortly after, English settlers built their colony on that same spot. In March 1621 Tisquantum walked into their settlement, where half had died over the winter. He taught them to plant corn, showed them where to fish and became their interpreter. Why help them? We do not know his reasons, but William Bradford called him 'a special instrument sent of God for their good'.
Without him the colony might not have survived. The greatest help came from the one who had lost the most.
