Christ the Redeemer

Arms wide over the city · Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

On top of the Corcovado mountain stands a 30-metre statue of Christ with his arms spread wide over Rio de Janeiro. It was designed by the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa with the French sculptor Paul Landowski, and paid for largely with gifts from Brazilian Catholics. Since its completion in 1931 it has become the symbol of the city and of Brazil. Today a small train climbs through the forest to the foot of the statue, where a chapel is built into its base.

Did you know?

The statue is hit by lightning several times a year. Its outer layer is made of thousands of small soapstone tiles.
