Santiago de Compostela
The end of the Camino · Spain
The apostle James, brother of John, was the first of the twelve to die as a martyr. In the early 9th century a tomb was found here that was believed to be his, and Compostela grew into one of the three great pilgrimages of the Middle Ages, with Rome and Jerusalem. For more than a thousand years pilgrims have walked the Camino here from all over Europe. Today they arrive on the great square before the cathedral, where on special days the giant censer, the Botafumeiro, swings through the church.
Did you know?
Anyone who walks at least the last 100 km receives a certificate, the 'Compostela'. The scallop shell is the pilgrim's sign.
