Taizé

Songs of the young · France

In 1940 the young Swiss Brother Roger came to this village in Burgundy, close to the line dividing occupied France, and hid refugees, among them Jews, in his house. After the war he founded a community of brothers from Protestant and later also Catholic backgrounds, living together as a sign of reconciliation. Brother Roger was killed during evening prayer in 2005, at the age of 90. Today the brothers still welcome tens of thousands of young people each year to pray with short, repeated songs.

Did you know?

Every summer thousands of young people come for a week of simple songs, silence and Bible study.

An inspiring story

A man on a bicycle

What can one person do in a world at war?

In 1940 the 25-year-old Swiss Roger Schutz cycled into France looking for a house where people could find peace. In the almost empty village of Taizé an old woman said to him: 'Stay here, we are so alone.' Why did those words decide it? Because he was looking for exactly that: a place where people were lonely and in need. He bought a house, prayed alone three times a day, and hid refugees, among them Jews, until the occupiers came looking in 1942.

That one man became a community of brothers that now welcomes tens of thousands of young people from all over the world every year. It started with one person who stayed.

Seek peace and pursue it.Psalm 34:14
