Willibrord, apostle of the Low Countries · Netherlands

Around 690 the English monk Willibrord sailed with eleven companions to Frisia to preach the gospel. In 695 the pope made him archbishop of the Frisians, and he built his church inside the old Roman fort of Utrecht. From here the faith spread through the Low Countries, which is why he is called their apostle. Today the Dom Church and its tower stand on the site, and a statue of Willibrord on horseback stands on the Janskerkhof nearby.
