Basilica of St Nicholas, Bari
Where Nicholas lies today · Italy
In 1087, after the Seljuk Turks had taken the region of Myra, sailors from Bari sailed there and carried off the bones of Saint Nicholas. They were welcomed home with great joy, and a basilica was built to hold them. Since then Bari has been a place of pilgrimage for both Catholic and Orthodox Christians. Today the relics rest in the crypt under the Romanesque basilica in the old town, and every May the city celebrates their arrival.
Did you know?
Each year a clear liquid called 'manna' is collected from his tomb. There is also an Orthodox chapel in the crypt.
