Myra

Saint Nicholas · Demre, Turkey

Nicholas was bishop of Myra, a port town in what is now southern Turkey, in the 4th century. Stories tell how he secretly threw bags of gold into the house of a poor man at night, so that his three daughters could marry instead of being sold. He became one of the most loved saints of East and West, patron of children and sailors. Today you can visit the church of St Nicholas in Demre, with its old frescoes and the sarcophagus where he was first buried.

An inspiring story

The bishop who grabbed the sword

Would you step between an innocent person and the sword?

Three innocent men in Myra had been sentenced to death by a governor who had taken a bribe. Nicholas, their bishop, heard of it and ran to the place of execution. The executioner already had his sword raised. Nicholas grabbed the blade with his bare hands, pulled it away and set the men free. Then he went straight to the governor and kept at him until he admitted his guilt. Why would a bishop take that risk? Because he believed that injustice is not only someone else's business.

We know Nicholas from presents and chocolate. The oldest stories about him are about courage.

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves… defend the rights of the poor and needy.Proverbs 31:8-9
