Bethany

Lazarus raised from the dead · West Bank

In this village near Jerusalem Jesus often stayed with his friends Martha, Mary and Lazarus. When Lazarus died, Jesus came four days later, and at the grave he wept. Then he called: 'Lazarus, come out!', and the dead man walked out of the tomb. Today you can go down narrow steps into the traditional tomb of Lazarus in al-Eizariya.

Did you know?

The town's Arabic name, al-Eizariya, means 'the place of Lazarus'.

An inspiring story

Jesus wept

What if God cries with you?

Lazarus, a close friend of Jesus, had died and been in the tomb for four days. His sister Martha came out to meet Jesus and said what many grieving people think: 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.' Her sister Mary said the same, in tears. Jesus saw her crying, and then he wept too. The shortest verse in the Bible: 'Jesus wept.' Why cry, if he knew he was about to raise Lazarus? Because he did not skip over their pain. Grief mattered to him, even with the answer already in his hands.

A few minutes later Lazarus walked out of the tomb. But first, Jesus cried with his friends.
