Garden of Gethsemane

The night before the cross · Jerusalem

After the last meal Jesus went with his disciples to this olive garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives. In deep anguish he prayed: 'Not my will, but yours be done', while his friends fell asleep. Then Judas arrived with soldiers and betrayed him with a kiss. Today the Church of All Nations, built in 1924 with gifts from many countries, stands beside the old olive trees.

Did you know?

A 2012 study dated some of the olive trees here to the 12th century, making them among the oldest olive trees known.

An inspiring story

Take this cup from me

Is it allowed to be afraid?

That night in the olive garden Jesus said to his friends: 'My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.' He fell to the ground and prayed: 'Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me.' Three times he came back and found his friends asleep. Why does the Bible tell this so honestly? Because courage is not the absence of fear. Jesus did not hide his fear from God. He spoke it out, and then added: 'Yet not what I will, but what you will.'

You may tell God everything, even that you can't go on. Sometimes that honest prayer is where the strength begins.

Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.Mark 14:36
