Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Crucifixion and resurrection · Jerusalem

Jesus was crucified on a rock just outside the city walls of that time and buried in a new tomb in a garden nearby. On the third day the tomb was found empty, the heart of the Christian faith. In the 4th century Emperor Constantine built a church over both places, which Christians had remembered until then. Today pilgrims climb to the rock of Golgotha inside the church and queue to enter the small shrine over the tomb, the Edicule.

Did you know?

Six churches share the building. To avoid quarrels, a Muslim family has kept the key for centuries.

An inspiring story

Called by name

Everyone went home. Only Mary stayed.

The tomb was empty and the body was gone. Peter and John had seen it and left. Mary Magdalene stood crying in the garden. Why didn't she leave too? Jesus had once set her free from seven demons; she had followed him ever since, and even an empty grave was closer to him than anywhere else. A man asked why she was weeping. She thought he was the gardener. Then he said one word: 'Mary.' And she knew him at once.

The first person to see the risen Jesus was the one who did not walk away from her grief. Sometimes the meeting comes exactly where you stay.

Jesus said to her, 'Mary.'John 20:16
