Emmaus

Hearts burning on the road · Israel

On the evening of Easter day two disappointed disciples walked home to Emmaus. A stranger joined them and explained the Scriptures, and at the table he broke the bread: then they recognised Jesus, and he was gone. 'Did not our hearts burn within us?' they said, and hurried back to Jerusalem that same night. Several places claim to be Emmaus; this pin marks Emmaus Nicopolis, where the ruins of a Byzantine and a Crusader church can be seen.

At least four villages claim to be Emmaus. This pin marks Emmaus Nicopolis.

Did you know?

Luke says Emmaus was 60 stadia (about 11 km) from Jerusalem, but some old manuscripts say 160 stadia.

An inspiring story

We had hoped

Have you ever walked away disappointed?

Two followers of Jesus were walking home from Jerusalem, sad and confused. A stranger joined them and asked what they were talking about. 'We had hoped that he was the one,' they said. All the way the stranger explained the Scriptures to them. At home they invited him in, and when he broke the bread, they suddenly recognised him: it was Jesus. Then he was gone. Why did they recognise him only then? Perhaps because that gesture was so familiar. 'Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road?'

That same evening they walked all the way back to Jerusalem in the dark. Sometimes Jesus walks beside you long before you notice.

Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road?Luke 24:32
