Magdala
Home town of Mary Magdalene · Israel
Magdala was a busy fishing town on the Sea of Galilee, known for salting fish. Mary Magdalene came from here: Jesus freed her from seven demons, and she followed him and supported his work. She stayed at the cross when others fled, and on Easter morning she was the first to meet the risen Jesus. Today you can visit the excavated town and its 1st-century synagogue, next to a modern church with an altar shaped like a boat.
Did you know?
In 2009 builders found a synagogue from the time of Jesus here, with a stone carved with a seven-branched lampstand.
