Capernaum

The town of Jesus · Israel

When Jesus left Nazareth, he made this fishing village on the Sea of Galilee his home base. Here he called the fishermen Peter and Andrew, James and John, taught in the synagogue and healed many sick people, among them Peter's mother-in-law. Friends even lowered a paralysed man through the roof to reach him. Today you can walk among the ruins of the village and the white limestone synagogue from the 4th or 5th century, built on the foundations of an older one.

Did you know?

A modern church stands on pillars above what is believed to be Peter's house. Through a glass floor you look down into the house.

An inspiring story

Four friends and a hole in the roof

How far would you go for a friend who can't get there on his own?

The house in Capernaum was packed to the door. Four men arrived carrying their paralysed friend on a mat, and there was no way in. So they climbed onto the roof, broke an opening in it and lowered him right in front of Jesus. Why go to such lengths? Because they were sure: if we can just get him to Jesus, something will happen. And it did. Jesus forgave the man, and he walked out on his own feet.

Mark writes that Jesus saw 'their faith': the faith of the friends. Sometimes faith is not only for yourself. It is how you carry someone else, all the way through the roof.

When Jesus saw their faith…Mark 2:5
