Five loaves and two fish · Israel

A large crowd had followed Jesus to a quiet place by the lake, and evening came with nothing to eat. A boy's five loaves and two fish were all there was, but Jesus gave thanks, broke the bread, and everyone ate until they were full. Twelve baskets of leftovers were gathered. Today the Church of the Multiplication stands here, rebuilt in 1982 on the foundations of a Byzantine church.

Did you know?

In front of the altar lies a 5th-century mosaic of a basket of bread between two fish. It is one of the best-known images in the Holy Land.

An inspiring story

A boy's lunch

What use is a little when the need is so big?

Five thousand hungry people on a hillside by the lake, and the disciples had nothing. Philip did the sums: half a year's wages would not buy enough bread. Then Andrew noticed a boy with five small barley loaves and two fish, and asked the question everyone was thinking: 'But what are they among so many?' The boy gave them anyway. Why? John doesn't say. Maybe simply because it was all he had. Jesus gave thanks, and everyone ate until they were full. Twelve baskets were left over.

God does not ask for what you don't have. He asks for what is in your hands.

Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?John 6:9
