Mount of Beatitudes

The Sermon on the Mount · Israel

On a hillside above the lake, Jesus sat down and taught the crowds what we call the Sermon on the Mount. He called the poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek and the peacemakers 'blessed', turning the values of the world upside down. Here he also taught his followers the Lord's Prayer. Today a quiet church from 1938, with a view over the Sea of Galilee, stands on the traditional spot.

Did you know?

The church on the hill has eight sides, one for each of the eight beatitudes.

An inspiring story

Who God calls happy

Who would you call lucky?

The crowds that followed Jesus up this hillside were the sick, the poor and the worn out. He sat down and began: 'Blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are those who mourn. Blessed are the meek. Blessed are the peacemakers.' It was the exact opposite of what the world calls success. Why start like that? Because he wanted the people in front of him to hear that God sees them first: the ones who have run out of strength, the ones who are crying, the ones who make peace instead of winning.

The Sermon on the Mount turns the world upside down. Whoever feels at the bottom may hear: you are close to God.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Matthew 5:3
