The Upper Room

The Last Supper and Pentecost · Jerusalem

On the night before he died, Jesus shared a last Passover meal with his disciples, washed their feet and gave them bread and wine: 'Do this in remembrance of me.' Fifty days after Easter the disciples were together in an upper room when the Holy Spirit came on them like wind and fire. Christians have remembered both events here on Mount Zion since early times. Today you can stand in a vaulted Gothic hall from the Middle Ages, built where earlier churches stood.

Did you know?

One building, three faiths: downstairs Jews honour the tomb of King David, upstairs is the Christian Upper Room, and the Ottomans once used it as a mosque.

An inspiring story

A towel and a bowl

Whose feet would you rather not wash?

On the last evening before his death, during the meal with his friends, Jesus got up, wrapped a towel around his waist and began to wash their dusty feet: the job of the lowest servant. Peter protested: 'You shall never wash my feet!' Judas was there too, the one who would betray him that night. Jesus washed his feet as well. Why do that, on that night of all nights? Because he wanted his friends to remember what his love looks like: kneeling, serving, not keeping score.

'Now that I have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.' Greatness, Jesus showed, is measured on your knees.

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.John 13:14
