Caesarea Maritima
The first non-Jewish believer · Israel
King Herod built Caesarea as a splendid Roman port city, and it became the seat of the Roman governors. Here Peter visited the officer Cornelius and baptised him and his household, the first non-Jews to join the church: 'God shows no partiality.' Later Paul was held prisoner here for two years, until he appealed to the emperor. Today you can see the Roman theatre, the hippodrome and the remains of Herod's harbour along the sea.

In 1961 a stone was found here bearing the name of Pontius Pilate, the only inscription naming him from his own lifetime.
