Croagh Patrick

The mountain of Saint Patrick · Ireland

As a boy of sixteen, Patrick was kidnapped from Britain by Irish raiders and kept as a slave herding animals. He escaped, but years later he returned of his own free will to bring the gospel to the people who had enslaved him. Tradition says he fasted for forty days on top of this mountain in 441. Today a small chapel stands on the summit, at the end of a steep, stony path to 764 metres.

Did you know?

Every year on the last Sunday of July tens of thousands of pilgrims climb the mountain, some barefoot.

An inspiring story

Back to the land of his captors

Would you go back to the people who hurt you most?

Patrick was sixteen when raiders carried him off as a slave to Ireland. For six years he herded animals in cold and hunger, and there he learned to pray, up to a hundred times a day, he wrote. Then a voice in a dream said: 'Your ship is ready.' He walked some 300 km to the coast and escaped. Back home, he dreamed again: the Irish calling, 'We beg you, come and walk among us once more.' Why go back? Because in those lonely years he had found God there, and he wanted his captors to find him too.

Patrick spent the rest of his life in Ireland. Forgiveness turned the land of his slavery into his life's work.

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.Matthew 5:44
