Kildare

Brigid and her eternal flame · Ireland

Brigid founded a monastery here for both women and men, beside a great oak: Kildare means 'church of the oak'. She was famous for her generosity; stories say she gave away butter, food and even her father's jewelled sword to the poor. With Patrick and Columba she is one of the three patron saints of Ireland. Today St Brigid's Cathedral stands on the site of her monastery, next to a tall round tower you can climb.

Did you know?

Nuns kept a fire burning here for centuries. In 1993 the Brigidine Sisters lit it again.

An inspiring story

Brigid's cloak

What if you asked for more than anyone thought possible?

Brigid asked the king of Leinster for land to build a monastery. He laughed and said she could have as much as her cloak would cover. She spread out her cloak, and four of her sisters each took a corner and walked: north, south, east and west. The cloak kept growing until it covered the whole plain of the Curragh. The amazed king kept his word. Why do the Irish still tell this story? Because Brigid trusted that God's generosity is bigger than a king's mockery.

Her monastery at Kildare became one of the great centres of Ireland, led by a woman. It started with a small cloak and a big prayer.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find.Matthew 7:7
