On the cross Jesus entrusted his mother to the disciple John: 'Here is your mother.' According to one tradition John later took Mary with him to Ephesus, where she spent her last years in a small house on a wooded hill; other traditions place her last home in Jerusalem. Popes Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI all came here to pray. Today the small restored stone chapel lies among the trees, and below it pilgrims leave their prayers on a wall of paper and cloth.

Another old tradition says Mary died in Jerusalem, where her tomb is shown near Gethsemane.

Did you know?

Priests found the house in 1891 by following the visions of a German nun. Muslims also come here to honour Maryam.
