Ephesus
Paul and the riot of the silversmiths · Turkey
Ephesus was one of the greatest cities of the Roman world and home to the huge temple of Artemis. Paul lived and taught here for more than two years, and so many people turned away from idols that the silversmith Demetrius stirred up a riot. For two hours the crowd in the theatre shouted: 'Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!' Today Ephesus is one of the best-preserved ancient cities, with its marble streets and the Library of Celsus.
Did you know?
The theatre where the crowd gathered is still standing and held about 25,000 people.
