Patmos

John's vision of the end · Greece

Towards the end of the 1st century John was banished to this small rocky island 'because of the word of God'. On the Lord's day he heard a loud voice like a trumpet and saw the visions written down in the Book of Revelation, ending with a new heaven and a new earth. Christians have honoured a cave halfway up the hill as the place where it happened. Today you can visit that Cave of the Apocalypse, with the split in the rock that pilgrims link to the voice of God.

Did you know?

The fortified Monastery of St John has watched over the island since 1088.

An inspiring story

Everything new

What do you see when you are stuck?

John was an old man, exiled to the small rocky island of Patmos because of his faith. His friends were far away, the churches he loved were under pressure, and Rome seemed all-powerful. There, on a Sunday, he received a vision. At its end he saw a new heaven and a new earth, and heard a voice: 'He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.' Why give an exile such a vision? Because hope is most needed exactly where you cannot go anywhere.

From a rock in the sea came one of the most hopeful promises ever written: 'I am making everything new!'

I am making everything new!Revelation 21:5
