Nazareth

The angel visits Mary · Israel

Nazareth was an unimportant village in Galilee: 'Can anything good come out of Nazareth?' someone asked. Here the angel Gabriel told a young woman named Mary that she would bear the Son of God, and she answered: 'Let it be to me according to your word.' Jesus grew up here as the son of Joseph the carpenter. Today the Basilica of the Annunciation, one of the largest churches in the Middle East, is built over the grotto remembered as Mary's home.

The Basilica of the Annunciation is decorated with images of Mary sent from countries all over the world.

An inspiring story

A yes from nowhere

'Can anything good come from Nazareth?'

That is what people said about this tiny village. Here lived Mary, a young girl engaged to a carpenter, when an angel told her she would bear the Son of God. She did not pretend to understand. She asked: 'How will this be?' And then she said: 'I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me as you have said.' Why say yes to something that could ruin her reputation and her future? Because she trusted God more than her own plans.

The biggest story of all began with an honest question and a brave yes, in a village nobody took seriously.

I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.Luke 1:38
