Rachel's Tomb
Where Jacob buried his beloved · Bethlehem
Jacob's beloved wife Rachel died on the road to Bethlehem while giving birth to her second son, Benjamin. Jacob buried her by the roadside and set up a pillar on her grave. Centuries later the prophet Jeremiah pictured Rachel weeping for her children, words that Matthew recalls at the birth of Jesus. Today the domed tomb at the entrance of Bethlehem lies behind high walls and is a place of prayer, especially for Jewish women.
Did you know?
For centuries women have come here to pray for children, because Rachel herself waited so long for a child.
