Cave of the Patriarchs
Tomb of Abraham and Sarah · Hebron
When Sarah died, Abraham bought the cave of Machpelah here as a family grave: the first piece of the promised land he ever owned. Later Abraham himself, Isaac and Rebekah, and Jacob and Leah were buried here too. That makes the place holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims, who all call Abraham their father. Today believers of different faiths still come to pray at the memorial tombs above the cave.
Did you know?
The huge walls around the cave were built by King Herod 2,000 years ago and still stand. Today the building is split into a synagogue and a mosque.
