Ur

Where Abraham's journey began · Iraq

Abraham's story begins in Ur, a rich Sumerian city on the Euphrates, usually identified with the 'Ur of the Chaldeans' in Genesis. From here his father Terah set out with Abraham, Sarah and Lot towards Canaan, a land they had never seen. Judaism, Christianity and Islam all trace their story back to this departure. Today the ruins lie in the desert of southern Iraq, where archaeologists found royal tombs full of gold in the 1920s.

The Bible says 'Ur of the Chaldeans'. Most scholars place it here in southern Iraq, but some look to Urfa in Turkey.
