Crossing of the Red Sea
The sea parts for Israel · Egypt
With Pharaoh's chariots closing in, the Israelites stood trapped between the army and the water. Moses stretched out his hand, a strong east wind blew all night, and the people crossed on dry ground. On the other side Miriam took her tambourine and sang, one of the oldest songs in the Bible. Where exactly it happened is not known; this pin marks one of the places suggested, near the Gulf of Suez.
Candidates include the Bitter Lakes, the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba. This pin marks one common suggestion.
Did you know?
The Hebrew text literally speaks of the 'Sea of Reeds'. That is why some look for a shallow lake rather than the open sea.
