Mount Sinai
The Ten Commandments · Egypt
After the exodus from Egypt, the people of Israel camped at the foot of the mountain of God. Moses climbed it in thunder and smoke and came back with the Ten Commandments: words for a freed people to live with God and with each other. Since the 4th century Christians have identified this peak, Jebel Musa, as that mountain. Today many pilgrims climb its 3,750 'Steps of Repentance' in the dark to see the sunrise from the top.
By tradition this is Jebel Musa. Other candidates exist, including in Saudi Arabia.

At its foot lies St Catherine's Monastery, inhabited by Orthodox monks without a break since the 6th century.
