Wartburg
The Bible in German · Germany
On his way back from Worms in 1521, Luther was 'kidnapped' by men of his protector, Frederick the Wise, and hidden in this castle above Eisenach. Disguised as a knight, he translated the New Testament from Greek into German, in words ordinary people could understand. His translation helped shape the German language itself. Today you can visit the simple room where he worked, the Luther room.
Did you know?
He grew a beard, called himself 'Junker Jörg' and finished the translation in about eleven weeks.
