Worms
'Here I stand' · Germany
In April 1521 the young Emperor Charles V summoned Luther to the imperial diet in Worms. Before the emperor and the princes of the empire, Luther was asked to take back his books. He answered that unless he was convinced by Scripture and plain reason he could not, for his conscience was captive to the Word of God. Today the large Luther Monument in Worms, unveiled in 1868, shows him surrounded by other reformers.
