Baptism Site on the Jordan

Jesus is baptised by John · Jordan

John the Baptist called people to turn back to God and be baptised in the Jordan. Jesus, who had nothing to confess, joined the line too. As he came up out of the water, the Spirit came down on him like a dove and a voice said: 'You are my beloved Son.' Today you can visit the excavated Byzantine churches and baptism pools of Al-Maghtas, on the Jordanian bank of the river.

Did you know?

The site is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Across the narrow river lies the Israeli baptism site.

An inspiring story

He must become greater

Could you be happy when someone else takes your spotlight?

John the Baptist was the most talked-about preacher of his day. Crowds came from everywhere to be baptised by him in the Jordan. Then Jesus came, and John said: 'I need to be baptised by you.' Later his followers complained that everyone was now going to Jesus instead. John answered: 'He must become greater; I must become less.' Why was he not jealous? Because he knew his task had never been to be the star, but to point to someone else.

Some people are like signposts: they don't want you to look at them, but to where they point. The world needs more of them.

He must become greater; I must become less.John 3:30
